The Gate Opens! Dec 16 2002
Here we go... the gate of evil has opened and who knows what will come from it? Well, probably not as much stuff as you would hope for, but there's definitely going to be some items that you can't find elsewhere. And I will attempt to create a development journal of DOOM as I remember it starting back in late 1992. First on the list of cool stuff...

Lee Killough's Archive Is BACK!

For many years, Lee Killough was The Man to go to for any DOOM technical trivia. He had an awesome site that collected a lot of interesting DOOM stuff and taught readers just how BSPs work and what causes some of the possible bugs in the DOOM engine. Lee took his site down in 1998 and gave it to me to maintain. I've finally found the time and the place to put that site up.

I changed the color scheme and added some comments on early pre-release screenshots, but other than that it's exactly as Lee left it. I know there are some dead links in there. If you find a dead link and find a replacement link, then by all means email me with the infomation and I'll update the offending link.

Enjoy! The link into Lee's site is at the top-left.

Ultimate DOOM Radio Ad

Back in 1995, when we were doing our own marketing and PR for our distribution company, id Distribution, we did some marketing on the radio. Nowadays, everything's been handed off to Activision so id can just concentrate on development - but when I was there I wanted us to handle everything we could. We did one radio ad for Ultimate DOOM and one for Hexen (soon to be in the Hexen section).

It turned out pretty damn cool!

Blood On The Walls!

Here's an interesting story. Some of you may be too young to remember, or just weren't into PC games at the time, but after DOOM was released, the entire world just went nuts.

We used to get a lot of stuff in the mail that DOOM fans sent to us and some of that stuff was music based on DOOM. There was one particularly awful song which I won't torture you with, but suffice to say the world was going DOOM crazy and wanted to tell us about it. Even the guys in the metal group GWAR wanted to be a part of it somehow (they eventually became part of Deathmatch '95 in Seattle...)

with Blood On The Walls

Anyway, one day in 1995 a cassette tape arrived at the offices and, as usual, I got it since I was very much the person who was talking with a lot of these people (along with Jay Wilbur who did most of the talking, btw!) We got this tape from a guy named Manny Charleton and the tape was created by the Manny Charlton Band.

Manny Charlton was the original guitarist of the legendary group Nazareth. Whoa.

I popped the tape in my tape player and was expecting to hear something less than awesome.... but instead, this song just ROCKED from the start! It's a little over 5 minutes long, but man it was the coolest thing we had sent to us. The tape cover says "Distribute as shareware" in keeping with the spirit of DOOM. Alas, we were so busy the tape somehow ended up in my collection, never to be seen for years...until now.

Here is the MP3 I made of the song. I've named it Blood On The Walls as it had no title. The cassette liner says DOOM everywhere, but I like this name.
